Letters to Surya is a personal series of artworks in which I explore the connections between time, memory, and the legacy of my grandmother. Each piece in this collection is a conversation with Surya, the sun, who symbolises light, clarity, and divine energy. Surya was also the name of my grandmother, more specifically my Dadi (father's mother). The objects my grandmother left behind serve as vessels of communication, and through them, I delve into the memories and emotions that linger in their presence.
Using the technique of cyanotype, I use the symbolism within the process of creation as a tool to communicate. Each painting develops over a distinct amount of time under the sun, mirroring the process of memory-making and the slow unfolding of conversations with the past. Some pieces take only minutes to develop, capturing fleeting moments, while others require hours, allowing deeper reflections and insights to emerge.
In this way, Surya becomes not only a source of light but also a reminder of the rhythms of life, the cycles of memory, and the beauty that unfolds over time. As the sun bathes each cherished object, casting shadows and revealing intricate patterns, I invite viewers to reflect on how time shapes our understanding of loss and connection. Through Letters to Surya, I celebrate the enduring bond between past and present, encouraging a conversation that transcends time.
