Each piece in this series is crafted with an appreciation for both traditional and modern techniques. I chose woodblock printing as my medium because wood, with its unique grain and texture, is like a time machine. It holds within it the stories and history of the tree it came from, capturing the essence of growth, change, and the passage of time.
Creating these prints is a meticulous process that makes each piece a unique artwork. For woodblock prints, the journey begins with selecting the wood, often choosing specific types for their distinctive grain patterns and textures. The wood is then carved, where each line and detail is etched into the surface by both hand and machine. This carving process is crucial as it defines the negative spaces that will remain ink-free, forming the final image. Every cut, every line, and every texture imprinted by the wood's grain contributes to the print's unique character. The inking stage involves applying ink to the carved block, where the wood's surface and its subtle nuances affect how the ink is transferred to the paper, ensuring that no two prints are ever exactly alike. The hand-pressing of paper onto the inked block further introduces slight variations, creating a distinct impression each time.
Each commissioned work will be entirely unique from the colour to the encrypted message. If you’re interested in a custom piece that weaves together these rich elements, please send an email with your specifications.
